I left school in July 1971 and for ten weeks worked in the department of Cawdells, a department store in Watford. In September 1971 I joined the Royal Engineers and started my training at the Junior Leaders Regiment, old Park Barracks in Dover. The train journey started at Carpenders Park Station and Mum and Paul walked to the station to see me off.
