The surname appears to come from the Germanic or Scandinavian name Ulf. The most famous is probably Ulf Thorgilsson, King Canute's brother-in-law, but the family hasn't been able to trace a connection to him. Another Ulf is Ulf son of Thorald "a wealthy Anglo-Danish chieftain". The famous ivory and gold "horn of Ulphus" in York Minster is variously attributed to one of these two Ulfs. Another Ulf was the owner of the manor of Fotingham at the time of the Confessor.
